World Leprosy Day

Description

Raising Awareness about Leprosy

World Leprosy Day is observed on the last Sunday of January every year to raise awareness about leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease. This day aims to educate people about the causes, symptoms, and treatment of leprosy, as well as to promote solidarity with those affected by the disease.

Eradicating Leprosy Worldwide

The day is an opportunity to acknowledge the progress made in the fight against leprosy and to reiterate the commitment to eradicating the disease worldwide. It is also a day to recognize the efforts of healthcare workers, volunteers, and organizations working tirelessly to combat leprosy.

Reducing Stigma and Promoting Inclusion

World Leprosy Day is also about reducing stigma and promoting inclusion of people affected by leprosy. It is essential to recognize that leprosy is curable, and those affected by it deserve equal rights and opportunities. By observing this day, we can work together to create a more inclusive and compassionate society.

Origin

History of Leprosy

Leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease, has been present in human societies for thousands of years. The disease was first described in ancient Indian and Chinese medical texts around 600 BC. In the Middle Ages, leprosy was widespread in Europe, leading to the establishment of leper colonies and hospitals.

The Discovery of the Bacterium

In 1873, Norwegian doctor Gerhard Armauer Hansen discovered the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae, which causes leprosy. This discovery led to a better understanding of the disease and the development of effective treatments.

The Founding of World Leprosy Day

World Leprosy Day was first observed in 1954, following a campaign by French philanthropist Raoul Follereau. Follereau, who was inspired by the work of Father Damien, a Belgian priest who dedicated his life to caring for leprosy patients in Hawaii, aimed to raise awareness about the disease and promote solidarity with those affected.
